"Preserving Family History Through Education and Research"
History of PSGS
During the year 2008 the Puget Sound Genealogical Society will celebrate its 35th anniversary.
The society started on May 2, 1973 and the first officers were elected at the November 1973 meeting. One year later
the library was started. The group has had several locations and has grown from 20 members to more than 200. The history

Officers and Committees
Who We Are
The primary purpose of PSGS is: "Preserving Family History Through Education and Research". While the focus of
PSGS is local, many of our members are actively researching their roots from across the U. S. and other parts of the world,
and we enjoy sharing our discoveries.
Since most of our activities are focused on education and research, the Cindy Shawley Spore Research Library located
at 2501 SE Mile Hill Drive, Suite A102, Port Orchard provides the resources for our own research as well as assisting genealogists
from other parts of the country. See the link to the Library to contact the librarian for more information.

| A Genealogy 101 class |
Classes, Workshops, Films, Special Interest Groups
A wide variety of learning opportunities provide help for persons who are researching their ancestors.
From Genealogy 101 to more advanced workshops and classes, a film series featuring a film each month, Special Interest
Groups (SIG) each month focusing on research within a particular state, family tree software groups to show how the
programs work and share ideas, monthly programs with interesting speakers and special all-day seminars, new members
find the help they need to overcome the "brick walls" in family research. See the Education Committee link
below for the latest information about learning opportunities.

| Cemetery Project meeting |
Cemetery Projects Committee On the first Thursday of
each month at 10:00 a.m. the Cemetery Committee meets at the PSGS library to work on updating cemetery records in Kitsap
County and enter the information in a database. The group also plans cemetery tours which tell the stories of the early
settlers of Kitsap County.
-------------
Records Preservation Projects
The Records Preservation Comittee is finishing its work on Obituaries and compiling lists in a computer for
Kitsap County and soon will begin working on Vital Records such as births and marriages. This committee recently began
work on preserving historical records and entering the information into a database.
This committee meets at 10:00 on the second Monday at the PSGS library. For more information see Obituary Project Committee. If you would like to help please contact Jeanne Menchenton.
Historical Records Preservation Update
New time and location: We are now meeting on the second Wednesday of each month at
10:00 a.m. at the library to type names into the computer program. You don't need to be an expert to do this.
It is as simple as filling in the blanks. The first phase of copying records is completed and we are now ready
to proceed with entering the information into a database program.
This is a very big job but when we are finished we will have searchable records of early 1900's in Kitsap
County. We need more volunteers to help with this task. This is a job you can do at home. We will provide
a jump drive or flash drive for you to save the data and we can then download it to the master file.
We are typing the information into Microsoft Access database, but if you are using Microsoft Excel we can
convert the files into Access. If you would like more information please let us know. Ann Northcutt is the
chairperson of this committee.

The Backtracker
Our quarterly newsletter, The Backtracker informs the members of upcoming events, as well as provides
articles which expand the members' understanding of how to use the tools and techniques of genealogy to do family
research. It also provides an opportunity for members to share their discoveries by publishing articles about the
results of their research. Receiving The Backtracker is one of the benefits of membership
in PSGS. The publication dates are: January, April, July and October. The deadline for articles is
on the first day of the month preceeding the publication date. See Newsletter.
-------------- Research
Trips Several times a year PSGS members plan a trip
to a research facility such as the Washington State Archives or NARA, the regional branch of the National Archives in Seattle.
Other trips include the genealogical collections of several libraries in the area. Jean Yager is the co-ordinator of
these trips. ------------
Membership We welcome new members in PSGS. Whether
you have already started researching your family tree or are just beginning you will find the help you need and the encouragement
of other PSGS members. The dues are $30.00 per year or
$45.00 for two. Membership renewals are due each year on January 1. The membership form can be found here . -------------
