Port Gamble, Kitsap County, WA

Buena Vista Cemetery is located in the town of Port Gamble on a hill overlooking the bay.

Driving Directions:  Take SR-16W which becomes SR-3 just past Gorst. Continue on SR-3 for approximately 25 miles. SR-3 becomes WA-104E at the Hood Canal Bridge. Continue on WA-104E for 1.3 miles. Turn left on N. Rainier Avenue. Turn left on Walker Drive. The Cemetery is on the right hand side off of Walker Drive. 

The Buena Vista Cemetery dates from the early 1850's, and contains numerous unmarked graves in addition to several surviving stones. The cemetery, as well as the entire town of Port Gamble, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is very well preserved and maintained.

Besides the remarkable beauty of its surroundings, the cemetery is well known as the final resting place of the first US Navy man ever lost in enemy action in the Pacific Ocean. Coxwain Gustave Engelbrecht was a crewman on the USS Massachusetts and his grave is honored in the center and highest point of Buena Vista Cemetery.
