Website Committee Meeting, 1300-1500, Library, Larry Swan, Larry Hardin, Sandie Morrison,
Madi Cataldo, Bob Edwards, Dorothy Lindquist, Terry Mettling
The committee discussed:
We discussed the current Roots Web site that
the Belfair Chapter is using, and the new PSGS website. Madi Cataldo will talk
with the Chapter and let us know their decision on moving their content to the PSGS site, under a separate Navigation Bar,
and adding subsequent pages under that link.
We discussed the Roots Web site, and how it
affects our current site. Consensus was to strip it out, leave a forwarding link
to the new address, and maintain it for a period of time, such as a year.
Having a logo on the home page was discussed,
Larry Swan will provide his artwork and we will fit it up to the front page.
Larry Hardin brought a key point to our website
design, in this case having ALL price/cost figures on a single page, and every where the topic is raised, such as for Cemetery
Committee research packages, Library non-member research fees, membership dues, etc., linked from the appropriate page. This concept may be applied to other subjects, including calendar.
It was suggested that the page footer be amended. The copyright notice font size is ok, but increasing the library, P.O. addresses,
and telephone number font size was discussed. Further, the need for the footer
was discussed, no changes at this time.
Another suggestion in The Obituary Project
PDF pages was to have the copyright notice removed at the top of each of those pages.
Larry Hardin will re-write content on home
page, and work with Dorothy on fit up.
There was concern about less than complete
Cemetery Project postings online, it was decided that ongoing updates to that project’s work will be posted. Discussion on how much data to post, and how much to hold in reserve for offline transfer to the researcher
customer. Along with this, how to transfer this data, some ideas being CD, or
posting requested (gravesite marker, etc.) photo or whatever on an internal web page, and providing the requestor with the
web page address so they may download it, or by simply e-mailing it, depending case by case on e-mail capabilities and file
size.
Add link to our website from U.S. Gen Web.
Dealing with the large number of pages, and
the addition of yet more as we progress, maintaining current information, being able to ensure no items to update will get
left behind in a sweep. An example discussed was the five versions of calendars,
including lists, upcoming events, grids, and so forth. It was decided by consensus
that the single page concept, linked from other pages would be applied.
There was individual opinion provided on which
pages should be where, the committee moved forward and established a logic of priorities of how we will organize the site
content we are presenting to the public.
By consensus, priorities were established. First will be researchers, followed by members, the Belfair Chapter, then housekeeping
items. Navigation Bar will be:
Home -
Research – inc. cemetery, obituary, library catalog,
costs
Activities
– inc. classes, meetings (& programs), special events
Belfair
Chapter – starting point for chapter pages
Contacts – list of the forwarding e-mail address
Links – links to other websites
Index – list of public pages within our website
PSGS history, officer and committee roster,
bulletin board, will be linked ONLY from the Index page.
It was decided that as we have ideas, comments,
or wish to offer improvements, changes, or any other type of communications between committee members by e-mail, it is suggested
that we include ALL committee members, just so we can avoid blind sides.
Operations Webmaster Dorothy Lindquist took
copious notes and will effect actions; construction webmaster Bob Edwards will be available if needed.
Final item, President Swan advised that NO
CHANGES will be made to the website without the approval of the committee. This
applies to the public portions, not the internal or test pages, and not to corrections, removing stale information/event notices.
